कोई नहीं है गाँधी का हत्यारा (Nobody killed Gandhi)

३० जनवरी १९४८ को महात्मा गाँधी को किसने मारा? आज की राजनीति के हिसाब से कहें तो सेमी-आटोमेटिक बेरेट्टा एम पिस्तौल से चली तीन गोलियों ने. न ही कोई विचारधारा और न ही कोई व्यक्ति इसके लिए जिम्मेदार था. अगर कोई अपनी सारी सूझ-बूझ को ताख पर रख दे तो ही उस सच को निगल सकता है जिसे ज़बरदस्ती हमारे गले में धकेला जा रहा है. लेकिन अगर कोई ऐसा न करे तो गाँधीजी की हत्या में आरएसएस की संलिप्तता के बारे बहुत कुछ है जिसे बार-बार याद करने, दोहराने और साबित करने की जरूरत है. मुद्दे से भटकने की कोई जरूरत नहीं है. यह लेख एक ऐसी साजिश की तरफ इशारा करता है जिसमें हिन्दू महासभा और आरएसएस दोनों बराबर के भागीदार थे.

गाँधीजी की हत्या पर आर० के० लक्ष्मण का एक कार्टून 

आरएसएस कभी स्वीकार नहीं करता कि गाँधीजी की हत्या में उसका कोई हाथ था. उनके हिसाब से नाथूराम गोडसे द्वारा अदालत में दिया गया बयान इस आरोप को झूठा सिद्ध करने के लिए काफी है. जिसमें गोडसे ने संघ से अपना कोई भी सम्बन्ध होने से इनकार किया था और कहा था कि सिर्फ वो और नारायण आप्टे ही गाँधीजी की हत्या के षड़यंत्र में शामिल थे. आरएसएस के हिसाब से खुद हत्यारे की ओर से दिया गया यह बयान काफी होना चाहिए. लेकिन इसी बयान में नाथूराम हिन्दू महासभा के विनायक दामोदर सावरकर का हाथ होने से भी साफ़ मुकर गया था. क्या इसका अर्थ है कि न तो आरएसएस और न ही हिन्दू महासभा गाँधीजी की हत्या के लिए जिम्मेदार थे? दरअसल, नाथूराम से कहा गया था कि अदालती कार्यवाही में वो हिन्दू महासभा और आरएसएस का बचाव करे. इसीलिए पूरी कार्यवाही के दौरान उसने एक बार भी वी० डी० सावरकर की ओर आँख उठाकर नहीं देखा था. 

जब लालकृष्ण अडवानी ने आरएसएस को इस मामले में क्लीन चिट देने की कोशिश की थी तो नाथूराम गोडसे के भाई और साजिश करने वालों में एक गोपाल गोडसे बिफर उठे थे. न सिर्फ उसने मैंने गाँधी को क्यों मारा नामक किताब में बल्कि अन्य जगहों पर भी उसने जोर देकर कहा कि उसके बड़े भाई ने कभी भी आरएसएस नहीं छोड़ी और अंत तक संघ के बौद्धिक कार्यवाह के तौर पर काम करता रहा. जब उससे नाथूराम गोडसे के अदालती बयान एक बारे में पूछा गया तो गोपाल गोडसे ने कहा कि नाथूराम ने ऐसा इसलिए कहा कि “”गाँधी की हत्या के बाद गोलवलकर और आरएसएस काफी मुसीबत में पड़ गए थे”. “आप कह सकते हैं”, गोपाल गोडसे ने कहा, “आरएसएस ने कोई प्रस्ताव पारित नहीं किया था कि जाओ और गाँधी को मार दो लेकिन आप उससे खुद को अलग नहीं कर सकते”. 

यह तो अदालती दस्तावेजों में दर्ज है कि फाँसी पर चढ़ने से पहले नाथूराम गोडसे ने आरएसएस की नयी संस्कृत प्रार्थना पढी थी जिसे पुरानी प्रार्थना की जगह १९४० में शामिल किया गया था. मृदुला मुख़र्जी, आदित्य मुख़र्जी और सुचेता महाजन अपनी किताब आरएसएस, स्कूल टेक्स्ट्स एंड मर्डर ऑफ़ महात्मा गाँधी में सही फरमाते हैं: “अगर वह तब आरएसएस में नहीं था, जैसा वह दावा करता है, तब वह नयी प्रार्थना से कैसे परिचित था और उस प्रार्थना को अपनी जिंदगी के ऐसे नाजुक मौके पर, जब वह मृत्यु के मुहाने पर खड़ा है, क्यों पढता है?” चलिए एक क्षण के लिए मान लेते हैं कि आरएसएस इस षड़यंत्र में सीधे शामिल नहीं था. वह तो हिन्दू महासभा का काम था जिसे ऐसा स्वीकार करने में कभी कोई शर्म नहीं आयी. आज भी उसे इस मामले में जरा सा भी संकोच नहीं होता. बल्कि अभी हाल ही में उन्होंने गोडसे की मूर्तियाँ स्थापित करने और मंदिर बनाने की बाकायदा कोशिशें की हैं. तब हिन्दू महासभा और आरएसएस के बीच के संबंधों की जाँच-पड़ताल जरूरी हो जाती है.  

गृह मंत्रालय का एक रिकॉर्ड बताता है कि आरएसएस और हिन्दू महासभा के बीच आपसी रिश्ते कितने गहरे थे. ८ अगस्त १९४७ को गृह सचिव ने सीआईडी के डीआईजी और मुंबई के पुलिस कमिश्नर से हिन्दू महासभा और आरएसएस के सदस्यों की लिस्ट तैयार करने को कहा. पूना पुलिस ने सिर्फ हिन्दू महासभा के सदस्यों की लिस्ट ही जमा कराई और आरएसएस के सदस्यों की अलग लिस्ट नहीं भेजी. क्योंकि दोनों के सदस्यों की अलग पहचान करना बहुत मुश्किल था और गुप्त संगठन होने की वजह से आरएसएस के बारे में जानकारी जुटाना खुद में बहुत कठिन काम था. १९४० के बाद जब आरएसएस ने उत्तर भारत में ताकत जुटानी शुरू की थी, गुप्तचर विभाग उसकी कार्यप्रणाली की जानकारी जुटाने में भारी मशक्कत करता रहा. आरएसएस की गतिविधियों पर १७ सितम्बर १९४७ की एक रिपोर्ट बताती है कि ‘उसके (संघ के) ज्यादातर संगठनकर्ता और कार्यकर्ता या तो हिन्दू महासभा के सदस्य हैं या उसकी विचारधारा में यकीन करते हैं.’ इसीलिए जीवनलाल कपूर समिति इस नतीजे पर पहुँची थी कि ‘यह सिद्ध करने के लिए साक्ष्य मौजूद हैं कि बहुतेरे आरएसएस सदस्य हिन्दू महासभा के भी सदस्य हैं’.     

इसके अलावा, गाँधीजी की हत्या के पीछे निर्णायक भूमिका उस जहरीले प्रचार की थी जो १९३० के मध्य से देश भर में फैलाया जा रहा था. वास्तव में न सिर्फ हिन्दू सांप्रदायिक संगठन बल्कि मुस्लिम लीग भी गाँधी और अन्य कांग्रेस नेताओं के खिलाफ जहर फैला रही थी. हिन्दू और मुस्लिम दोनों तरह के साम्प्रदयिकताओं के लिए गाँधी साझे दुश्मन थे. हालांकि, आखिर में, भारत के बंटवारे के बाद वो हिन्दू साम्प्रदायिकता ही थी जिसे गाँधी भारत में हिन्दू राष्ट्र की स्थापना के अपने पुराने सपने को साकार करने की दिशा में सबसे बड़ा रोड़ा लगते थे. यह भी सरकारी दस्तावेजों में दर्ज तथ्य है कि उस समय के गृह मंत्री सरदार पटेल ने गोलवलकर को लिखे एक पत्र में साफ़ तौर पर कहा था कि “उनके (संघियों के) सभी भाषण सांप्रदायिक जहर से भरे थे. इस जहर के परिणामस्वरुप देश को गाँधीजी के प्राणों की क्षति उठानी पड़ी.” “आरएसएस के लोगों ने”, पटेल ने आगे जोड़ा, “”गाँधीजी की मृत्यु के बाद ख़ुशी जाहिर की और मिठाइयाँ बांटीं.” १८ जुलाई १९४८ को श्यामाप्रसाद मुख़र्जी को लिखे अपने पत्र में उन्होंने स्पष्ट रूप से कहा: “”गाँधीजी की हत्या और आरएसएस-हिन्दू महासभा के बारे में मामला न्यायालय में विचाराधीन है इसलिए इन दोनों (संगठनों) की संलिप्तता के बारे में मैं कुछ नहीं कहूँगा लेकिन हमारी सूचना बताती यह पुष्ट करती है कि इन दोनों संगठनों की गतिविधियों की वजह से, ख़ास तौर पर पहली (आरएसएस) की वजह से, देश में एक ऐसा वातावरण तैयार किया गया जिस कारण से यह खौफनाक हादसा संभव हुआ.”

मान लें कि अगर ऊपर लिखा यह सब निरा झूठ है और आरएसएस का गाँधीजी की हत्या से कोई लेना-देना नहीं है तो उसे नाथूराम गोडसे, सावरकर और हिन्दू महासभा की सार्वजनिक रूप से निंदा करनी चाहिए. उसे गाँधीजी के खिलाफ दिए गए जहरीले भाषणों के लिए माफी मांगनी चाहिए जो कि अभिलेखीय स्रोतों में साफ़ तौर पर दर्ज हैं. उसे एनडीए-1 के दौरान संसद परिसर में सावरकर की प्रतिमा लगाने के लिए भी सार्वजनिक क्षमा मांगनी चाहिए. उसे सरदार पटेल की सार्वजनिक भर्त्सना भी जरूर करनी चाहिए जिन्होंने न सिर्फ आरएसएस पर प्रतिबन्ध लगाया था बल्कि अपने पत्राचार में संघ के बारे में इस तरह की ‘आपत्तिजनक’ टिप्पणियाँ भी की थीं. सबसे बढ़कर, उसे हिन्दू राष्ट्र की स्थापना के अपने सपने से छुटकारा पा लेना चाहिए जो कि उसकी विचारधारा से नाभिनालबद्ध है और जिसकी वजह से गाँधीजी की हत्या की गयी थी.

Nobody killed Gandhi
Who killed Gandhi on 30 January 1948? Trying to be politically correct; three petty bullets fired from semi automatic Beretta M pistol. Neither any ideology nor any individual was responsible for that. If one surrenders one’s own faculty of critical enquiry would comfortably swallow the truth we are pushed to be swallowed nowadays. But, if not, then there is much to be reiterated, reasserted and remembered about RSS links to the murder of Mahatma Gandhi. There is no need to divert the issue. Hence, this article emphasizes on historical evidences which insinuate a conspiracy in which RSS and Hindu Mahasabha were equal stake holders.

RSS never accepted that it had anything to do with Gandhi’s murder conspiracy. For them, the proof is Nathuram Godse’s court statement. Godse denied any links with the RSS and said that only he and Narayan Apte were involved in the conspiracy. For RSS, this submission by the assassinator himself is more than enough. But in the same statement he also nullified Hindu Mahasabha and its mentor Savarkar’s hand in it. Does it prove neither RSS nor Hindu Mahasabha was responsible for Gandhi’s murder? Actually, Godse was instructed to shield the RSS and the Hindu Mahasabha. That’s why during the trial he never made an eye to eye contact with Savarkar.

When Lalkrishna Advani tried to give RSS a clean chit, Godse’s younger brother and one of the conspirator Gopal Godse infuriated. Not only he wrote a book on Gandhi’s assassination entitled as Why I Assassinated Gandhi but in other places too, he testified that the elder Godse had never left the RSS and served as its Bouddhik Karyavah (intellectual worker). When he was asked by a correspondent about Godse’s court statement, Gopal Godse said that Nathuram denied it because “Golwalkar and RSS were in a lot of trouble after the murder of Gandhi”. “You can say”, junior Godse added, “RSS did not pass a resolution, saying that, ‘go and assassinate Gandhi’. But you do not disown him.” It is a recorded fact that before going to gallows, Nathuram Godse had recited the new Sanskrit RSS prayer that replaced the old one in 1940. Mridula and Aditya Mukherjee, in their famous book RSS, School Texts and the Murder of Mahatma Gandhi rightly asked: “if he was no longer in the RSS, as he claimed, then how did he know the new prayer and why did he recite it at such a critical point in his life, on the threshold of its end?”

Let’s assume for a moment, RSS was not directly involved in the conspiracy. It was Hindu Mahasabha which never ever felt ashamed of the act. Even today, it does not show any sign of embarrassment in this regard. Rather, they, very recently, tried to erect statues and build temples after Godse’s name. How close the association between both the organisations was shown by a record of Home Ministry. On 8 August 1947, the Home Secretary asked the DIG of the CID and the Police Commissioner of Bombay to prepare a list of RSS and Hindu Mahasabha workers, the Poona Police only submitted the list of Hindu Mahasabha members and didn’t submit a separate list of the RSS members. Getting information about RSS organization was quite difficult as it was a secret organization. Since 1940s when the RSS was strengthening its position in northern India, the IB was struggling to get details of its modus operandi. A report on the activities of the RSS dated 17 September 1947 stated that ‘most of its prominent organizers and workers are either members of the Hindu Mahasabha or sponsors of the Hindu Mahasabha ideology’. Hence, the Jeevan Lal Kapur Commission reached on the conclusion that ‘there is evidence to show that many RSS members were members of the Hindu Mahasabha’.

Apart from that, the pivotal factor behind Gandhi’s assassination was the vicious atmosphere which had been created since middle of 1930s. Actually, not only the Hindu communal organizations like RSS and Hindu Mahasabha but the Muslim League too was spreading venom against Gandhi and other Congress leaders. Either for Hindu or Muslim communalism, Gandhi was the common enemy. However, at last, after partition of India, it was Hindu communalism which found Gandhi the biggest obstacle to achieve the long cherished goal of establishing a Hindu Raj in India. It is again a recorded fact that Sardar Patel, the then Home Minister of India, in a letter to Golwalkar, categorically said that “all their (RSS men) speeches were full of communal poison. As a result of their poison, the country had to suffer the sacrifice of the invaluable life of Gandhiji.” “RSS men”, Patel added, “expressed joy and distributed sweets after Gandhiji’s death.” In his letter to Syama Prasad Mookerjee dated 18 July 1947 Patel categorically wrote:“As regards the RSS and the Hindu Mahasabha, the case relating to Gandhiji’s murder is sub judice and I should not like to say anything about the participation of the two organisations, but our reports do confirm that, as a result of the activities of these two bodies, particularly the former, an atmosphere was created in the country in which such a ghastly tragedy became possible.”

Above all, if everything written above is false and RSS had nothing to do with Gandhi’s assassination, it must publically condemned Nathuram Godse, Savarkar and Hindu Mahasabha. It should also apologize for its hate speeches against Gandhi that is well documented in the archival records. It should make a public apology for erecting a statue of Savarkar in the premises of Parliament of India during NDA I. It must denunciate Sardar Patel who imposed a ban on the RSS and made such comments in his correspondence. Moreover, it should get rid of ideology of Hindu Rashtra which killed Gandhi.
